Does scrap metal take bikes?

Old bikes are one of the easiest items to recycle – and yes, scrap metal absolutely takes bikes. Whether it’s a rusted mountain bike or a cracked road frame, most of it can be scrapped for value.

What parts of a bike are recyclable?

Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminium, with some higher-end models using titanium or carbon fibre. The metal frame, handlebars, chain, rims and cranks are all recyclable and welcome at 4G Metals.

Non-metal parts like tyres, seats, reflectors and plastic grips can’t be scrapped, but they won’t stop us from accepting the bike as a whole. We’ll simply remove and sort it on-site.

Should I dismantle the bike first?

It’s optional. If you want to remove the tyres or seat to lighten the load or make transport easier, go for it – but it’s not required. We’re set up to process whole bikes, loose frames, wheels, or even scrap metal from a repair workshop.

What about e-bikes?

Electric bikes can also be recycled, but they require a bit of extra care. E-bikes contain batteries that need to be removed and handled separately due to fire risk and hazardous materials. At 4G Metals, we accept e-bikes – but please remove the battery before drop-off, or notify our team so we can manage it safely. Once the electronics are separated, the remaining frame and metal components are recycled just like a standard bike.
